Paper Sea are tipped to win a string of gongs at the Brit Awards this week, but the celebrations could be a tame affair as the bandβs frontman Andy Sutcliffe admits he is trying to stop taking drugs. The rocker is a recovering addict and admits his next record is his first as a sober(ish) man. Speaking on Swedish chat show Skavlan, Andy, 29, says, "The first, like, half of the album was written while I was still using. I used to call it sober-adjacent cos I wasn't always actively doing anything, but it was still part of my life. I may not have been high as we were recording every bit of it, but it wasn't -- it wasn't gone. And I think that it's easy to convince yourself that it isn't a problem unless it's nonstop. But that's untrue. It's still doing damage to your relationships with other people. We're nearly finished with 'Notes [On a Conditional Form]', and that's the first one that's properly me, with nothing else. I have now started touring without doing it all of the time. Thatβs a challenge. But you have just got to take it day by day because you will just freak yourself out. You -- I -- think about it constantly. What would happen if I take three of these? Can I crush this and snort it? How easily could I hide it? It's more about individual choices that lead to significant results: you choose something else in every moment and it helps keep you in the direction in which you'd like to go."
