learning that andy was possibly a ghostwriter on lana's california puts it in such a different light? if this was written when he and max were spotted hanging out with her in california in 2017 it coincidentally lines up with mom and dad's reunion at the vmas. "I shouldn't have done it, but I read it in your letter // You said to a friend that you wish you were doing better // I wanted to reach out, but I never said a thing" and "You don't ever have to be stronger than you really are // When you're lying in my arms, and, honey // You don't ever have to act cooler than you think you should // You're brighter than the brightest stars" are peak suttauk lyrics and i won't hear otherwise!!

I know that it seems like Simon left PS willingly, and Andy + the band seems really supportive of his attempts as a solo career, even if he never took off the way Paper Sea did, but I've always wondered if there was more to that story than the public perception/understanding. I have two theories about what really happened:

Simon had a stronger personality than Ian. He was more vocal in interviews and there's one video where he gives Andy a "friendly" head bump to move him from the mic when finishing Fake Tales of SF (link to video). Perhaps this prevented Andy to become the Frontman of what appeared to be a worldwide phenomenon rock band and Simon had to be removed.

Ian was simply a better Bass player and they made a decision of success vs friendship ("It's not personal, Simon, just business").

PAPER SEA Self Titled - Fits best in the late night, preferably around 1am.
-Songs like The City are great for night walks in a city, Robbers is great for late night drives, and Is There Somebody Who Can Watch You is for crying at 3am.

ILIWYS- Fits best in the morning.
Songs like Love Me or UGH! are great for morning commutes. None of these songs are really ambient enough to put you to sleep, with the exception of Lostmyhead or She Lays Down (maybe).

ABIIOR- for afternoons and evenings, for the golden hours, preferably in the Autumn.
Songs like Mine, How to Draw, or Sincerity are great for walking in the park in the late afternoon, It's Not Living is that song blasting at a picnic. As the night draws closer, songs like I always wanna die or Be My Mistake are great.

NOACF - a little bit of the good in everything :)

heysailor:

not to sound like a conspiracy theorist but the picture on the top is from the original version of the fluorescent adolescent single on cassette tape. it was only ever available in feb 2009. the picture on the bottom is from daphne sutcliffe's most recent book. it's a photograph of her in the early 80s, taken by marc hindley's father, thomas. i'll let you do the maths

rainbow_sea:

so i know that andy is married but who is going to hook me up with his hot cousin? #he's tall too right

...do me a favour, and break out your wallet — get some good headphones*, and then listen to TBHC again. Every piece of music benefits from good audio gear, of course, but this is the Paper Sea album that just changes when you have the proper equipment (I'd say that EYCTE comes in second).

You know how we all said that the sonic range of this record is not particularly wide, but is very, very deep? Exactly: if you want to lose yourself into those deep (lunar crater) waters, there really isn't anything that can get you there as much as good headphones. Even a good hi-fi stereo sound set won't do it justice, in my opinion — that's stuff for AM or WPSIA.

Start Treatment, Golden Trunks, and TWFEMTFF are particular standouts — especially now that our brains have become intimately familiar with things like lyrics and the songs' unusual, erratic structure, there's more brain space to focus on all the sounds that lurk underneath. And boy, oh boy, this is the stuff for dreams.

The bass, the backing vocals, the little snippets of sound scattered all around the musical room. This LP indeed feels like a small room with a view, filled with details, and the more you look the more you discover. It's a blessing — and it's what makes you really understand how much PS have evolved as musicians specifically, and not just as artists generally.

Why, overall, TBHC is a goddamn masterpiece.

don't get me wrong, i love harlowe as much as the next paper sea stan but can we just have a moment to recognize what an effortless style icon sophie was? you can tell that andy learned a lot from being with her because her vibe is still reflected in his personal fashion taste

paperthesoy:

I always feel a bit weird saying this but this is my absolute favorite version of Sex. It's so raw and emotional. Fuck it's so good. And I think about the fact that this was probably the version of this song that Harlowe got to hear and I'm jealous of 2009 Harlowe all over again.
