where are you in the world right now?

i'm back in georgia, with the cast of stranger things! filming's started back up and we're all super excited. can you see my bedroom walls? it's day glo green and it's seriously the best thing. some of the rooms - i'm actually staying in this big house with roy who plays steve, and penny who plays nancy, and roy's sister flora who is working on a different project of her own, but some of the rooms are so ridiculously decorated, we're like, obsessed. and penny and flora decorated for halloween!

can you tell us anything about what's coming with stranger things? is there anything you really wanna see for robin this season, or ships you wanna see?
i'd love a great romance for robin! wouldn't you? but i mean i also want joyce and hopper to get their happy ending, too. and for steve to have some happiness because at this point he kind of deserves it? also, justice for bob newby, superhero! [laughs] i will say, i was a fan before i was ever on the show so it's wild now to be on the inside like this. i might not have even watched season 3 because i feel weird watching myself, but gaten matarazzo has a group chat with roy and me, and he made us. we all watched it together.

speaking of joyce - that's your mom in real life, bella rowe. what's it like working with your mom everyday?
honestly we don't really work together! which is nice, because i think it'd be really hard for me to be on set and step outside of the fact that she's my mom and not, you know, noah and charlie's. plus she'd probably constantly be telling me to stand up straight in between takes and that would make me crazy!

what has it been like, growing up in the public eye? do you think it's helped you to navigate fame now as an adult?
[laughs] wow, that's a really great question! i think navigating a successful career in the spotlight is definitely different when you've grown up with attention from the public eye all your life, but i definitely don't think there's anything that can prepare you for what's essentially going from a featuring role at best to being directly in your own spotlight. it changes the way you're able to exist in the world - the things you post on instagram, or the way you phrase the things you want to say. it's really surreal. like, i acknowledge that i'm lucky to be in this position at all, but it's weird to have to learn how to be, or to not be able to do normal things - like read the comment section on an insta post - just because of the family you were born into.

has your mom given you any good advice on how to navigate success?
[laughs again] my mom has had her own ups and downs on navigating success in her lifetime. i think some of the best advice i get usually comes from people who are family-adjacent. like not reading the comment section, or remembering that people are commenting and judging me based on things they see and not necessarily who i really am. it's easy to take a hurtful comment to heart sometimes, so that's really good advice.

with stranger things and also the new mutants, you've played a few lgbtq+ characters now. is there something about them that draws you in?
it's really more just about telling the story of someone's truth, isn't it? for any of the characters i've played, their sexuality isn't what defines them, it just happens to be a detail in who they are. i like when a show or movie doesn't make it all about that, because that's not who any of us are, you know? anyway, it's definitely easy to see myself in those characters, so i think that's why i was drawn to them the way i was.

you've been linked to some pretty famous guys, like evan engelson and riley effeny. are you and riley still together? or are you back with evan? was there any truth to the indy james rumor?
oh my gosh! the indy thing was just a rumor, we've known each other since i was sixteen and we were both bored during lockdown, so we hung out a few times! it's really funny to me how people take things and run with them. i'm actually not dating anyone right now! i've been single since... march? with everything that happened in the world, a new relationship wasn't really ready for quarantine and all the things that came with it. i wish riley nothing but the best though, he's doing great and i still listen to his music all the time!

a while back you posted on your socials about some stuff that got stolen from you. did you ever get it back?
you know what? thank you for asking about that. that was a really crazy thing that happened to a lot of people - having our privacy violated and having things that belong to us taken. it sucked, and i posted on insta and twitter about a few of the things that were taken from me being irreplaceable and having a lot of sentimental value to me and i offered a reward if someone turned it in at a police station or anywhere, no questions asked. and you know what? someone did. the thing that was stolen was actually my dad's cardigan and i don't think the person knew what they had, or how much it meant because it's one of the few physical things i have left from him. so whoever you are, thanks for bringing it back. also! i just want everyone to know that i sold that apartment, so please don't go stalking the new unsuspecting family who live there, i'm sure they'd be so scared!

what's going on with rebel rebel? we miss seeing you live! any plans for a new album?
we have been working on new music! some of it has been while we were together, and a lot of it has been while we were apart so it's coming along piece by piece, but i'm excited for everyone to finally be able to hear it when we're done. in the meantime, our song california friends is on the hbo unpregnant soundtrack! we also released two solo songs, what am i gonna do today? and i love us, so check those out! we can't really do live shows until it's safe again and we'd never wanna risk anyone's well-being, but believe me, i miss being on a stage more than you can imagine. while you wait for new rebel rebel content though, have you checked out holy crepe's new album that just dropped, remote? it's so good, you won't regret it.

are you planning any collaborations for the new album? maybe even with holy crepe, since you're all so close? if not, who would be your dream collaboration?
i've never officially collaborated with holy crepe, but evan and i put out a christmas single last year which we'll definitely plug again once halloween month is over - listen to holiday-ish when the time comes! - [laughs] and i've been on stage with his band a few times to sing clairo's part in are you bored yet? but that's as official as we've ever gotten with collaborating. i think it can be pretty hard with labels and all of the technical red tape involved. emil canevari from transitoire said he wanted to collaborate once though and that would be a dream song!

what's coming up for you in the future? any new projects to look forward to?
yes! i just wrapped up a small indie film with sam toomey called wolf, so keep an eye out for that next year. daisy jones will be coming your way soon, too. and new rebel rebel music is absolutely on its way! but, even bigger than that, i just signed on for my biggest project yet - i'll be playing furiosa in an upcoming mad max prequel, and i can't wait. i know it's just hitting the internet and deadline, but it's so surreal to me that i haven't even told my friends about it yet. wish me luck! thanks for having me, buzzfeed! next time, can i do the one with the puppies?
