FIRST NAME: Marlene
Marlene is a German name, a combination of Maria + Magdalene. Maria comes from the name Mary, the meaning of which is unknown. Theories about the name meaning "sea of bitterness", "rebelliousness", and "wished for child"; however it was most likely originally an Egyptian name, perhaps derived in part from mry "beloved" or mr "love". Magdalene means "of Magdala", a village on the Sea of Galilee whose name meant "tower" in Hebrew. In the New Testament, Mary Magdalene was cleaned of evil spirits by Jesus and then remained with him during his ministry, witnessing the crucifixion and the resurrection.
MIDDLE NAME(S): Brìghde
Brìghde is the Scottish Gaelic equivalent of the Irish name Bríd, English Bridget or Brigid. Bridget or Brigid is a Gaelic/Irish female name derived from the noun brígh, meaning "power, strength, vigor, virtue". An alternate meaning of the name is "exalted one". Its popularity, especially in Ireland, is largely related to the popularity of Saint Brigid of Kildare, who was so popular in Ireland she was known as "Mary of the Gael". This saint took on many of the characteristics of the early Celtic goddess Brigid, who was the goddess of agriculture and healing and possibly also of poetry and fire. One of her epithets was "Brigid of the Holy Fire". Brigit appears in Irish mythology as a member of the Tuatha Dé Danann, the daughter of the Dagda and wife of Bres, with whom she had a son named Ruadán. It has been suggested that Brigid is a continuation of the Indo-European dawn goddess. She is associated with the spring season, fertility, healing, poetry and smithcraft. Cormac's Glossary, written in the 10th century by Christian monks, says that Brigid was "the goddess whom poets adored" and that she had two sisters: Brigid the healer and Brigid the smith. This suggests she may have been a triple deity. St. Brigid is associated with perpetual, sacred flames, such as the one maintained by 19 nuns at her sanctuary in Kildare, Ireland. The sacred flame at Kildare was said by Giraldus Cambrensis and other chroniclers to have been surrounded by a hedge, which no man could cross. Men who attempted to cross the hedge were said to have been cursed to go insane, die or be crippled.
SURNAME: McKinnon
Clan Mackinnon or Clan Fingon is a Highland Scottish clan associated with the islands of Mull and Skye, in the Inner Hebrides. The clan supported the Jacobites in the 17th and 18th centuries, and tradition has the chief of the clan aiding in the escape of Bonnie Prince Charlie in his flight to France. Because of their support for the last Jacobite rebellion the Mackinnon chiefs lost the last of their ancient clan lands. Because of the clan's early association with the Lords of the Isles there is no trace of early history of the Mackinnons as an independent clan. On the forfeiture of the last Lord of the Isles in the 1490s the clan at last gained some independence, though the Clan Mackinnon was always a minor clan and never gained any great power. The surname Mackinnon is an Anglicisation of the Gaelic Mac Fhionghuin, which is a patronymic form of the Gaelic personal name meaning "fair born" or "fair son".
NICKNAMES: M, Mar, Mars Bars, Mrs S
M and Mar are the most commonly used nicknames. Mars Bars was what her maternal grandfather called her, and Mrs S was what her husband's friends called her when she was married. Her current boyfriend refers to her as "your worshipfulness" because he thinks he's Han Solo. She's vehemently against being called "Marly", "Lena" or "Len".
DATE OF BIRTH & ZODIAC SIGN: 22 Jan 1957 / Capricorn
Capricorn is a sign that represents time and responsibility, and its representatives are traditional and often very serious by nature. These individuals possess an inner state of independence that enables significant progress both in their personal and professional lives. They are masters of self-control and have the ability to lead the way, make solid and realistic plans, and manage many people who work for them at any time. They will learn from their mistakes and get to the top based solely on their experience and expertise.
FORMER HOUSE: Ravenclaw, but was very nearly in Slytherin.
Ravenclaws born under the sign of Capricorn excel at their studies, because they have both a love of knowledge for its own sake and a deep desire to use that knowledge to gain prestige or authority. They are disciplined students with acute perception and shrewd minds; they might take a little longer to reach conclusions than their peers, but their conclusions tend to be more well thought out and thorough. They have dry, ironic wit and are fond of making subtle jokes that only those blessed with intelligence and perception can understand. There's not much that these wizards miss; they usually know what is going on long before anybody else does.
The traits emphasised here will be ambition, determination, discipline, and pragmatism. You can't make that castle in the sky if you don't build a solid foundation under it, and Capricorns excel at building foundations. (Actually, they excel at planning the foundations and directing others to do the grunt labour. It's not that they're afraid to get their hands dirty, but large work usually requires delegation and a staff, and Capricorns are managers more often than not.) While not flamboyant or showy about it, Capricorns still tend to be obsessive overachievers, a common trait in House Slytherin. Too, wizards born under the sign of Capricorn are good at being discreet, secretive, and diplomatic; whereas the Libra's diplomacy is based on charm and a desire for harmony, the Capricorn's diplomacy is based on the knowledge that being on good terms with people is extremely useful in getting one's way or finding out sensitive information. These also are traits commonly associated with House Slytherin. They might not be sexy traits, but they're very handy.
IS THEIR FAMILY LARGE OR SMALL? WHO DOES IT CONSIST OF?: Marlene's biological immediate family is large, and consists of her mother and father, and her nine siblings, eight of whom are older.
She and her siblings share a father only. Between them, they have five different mothers: Angela Barrett (mother to Marlene, born in 57), Caitriona Ramsay (mother to Effie and Gregory, born in Aug 44 and Apr 51), Morag Campbell (mother to Isobel, Colin, Davina and Neil, born in Oct 45, Mar 47, Jul 52, and Jun 54), Charlotte Egerton (mother to Iona and Aileas, born in Dec 49 and Nov 50), and Emma Devereaux (mother to Thomas, born in Sep 60). Charlotte and Emma's families were members of the peerage, and both of Charlotte's daughters married sons of peers for political and financial reasons, as did Isobel. Effie married a Quidditch player, and Colin is currently engaged to an unattractive but wealthy heiress. Gregory was killed in December 78, and Isobel (and her family) in May 79. Isobel married The Hon. Christopher Arbuthnott in 1969, and had four children: Iain (71), Rhona (73), John (75), and Keith (77). Effie married Barnton Seeker Glenn Davies in 1973, and has two children: Jack (64) and Allan (72). Glenn is not Jack's biological father. Aileas married Sir James Frederick Hope in 1976, and has three children: Nicola (77), Claire (77) and James (79). Iona married David Francis St. Claire-Erskine in 1971, and had four children: Aileen (73), Alexander (74), Sybil (75), and David (77).
Her maternal grandparents passed away in the early to mid 70s, and her paternal grandparents are still living. The current Clan Chief for the McKinnons of wizarding heritage is Marlene's great-great grandmother. To become clan chief, you must be McKinnon by name, and by blood; an only child, Marlene's great-great grandmother, Margaret, avoided missing an opportunity to take over clan leadership by never marrying (she refused even the option to marry a cousin), and keeping the McKinnon name. All of her children were born to unknown fathers, preventing them from having a surname that would prevent them from following in her footsteps. Marlene is the youngest daughter of Margaret's third daughter's (Janet - who similarly kept the McKinnon name) son. Marlene lived in Scotland with her paternal family from 57 to 61, and left with her mother following the birth of her youngest sibling, Thomas, though the family already disliked Angela, who they believed to be "common", having married (not that they were legally married) above her station.
On her mother's side, her grandparents are Alice and George, both of whom have passed away. Her maternal grandfather used to work at the dockyards, but he and his wife opened a drapery after an injury forced him to change careers. Angela dated while Marlene was growing up, but never married; both divorced and being a single mother carried a stigma in the 1960s and 1970s, so Angela allowed people to believe that her husband had passed away, rather than announce that she had never been married to Marlene's father. Iain McKinnon's romantic entanglements were not unknown in the wizarding world, however, and were often the subject of conversation and ridicule as Iain unsuccessfully attempted to marry his children into more prominent wizarding families. He settled for wealthy Muggle families, who could afford them the luxury of paying for influence, but hoped that the younger children could more easily marry up. This led to a conflict when, at 17, Marlene married Muggleborn Glaswegian Graham Stewart, who was involved with the Frasier crime family and Ashwinder. Their marriage ended in December 1977, after intervention by Marlene's father ($$$).
WHERE DOES SHE LIVE AND WHAT IS IT LIKE? Currently -- Thamesmead, Bexley, London with Dorcas Meadows. She formerly lived in Scalpay, Scotland, and Stepney, Tower Hamlets, which is also in London.
The flat in Bexley is a two-bedroom flat, but otherwise unremarkable. Thamesmead as it is now was built at the end of the 1960s. Efforts were made to solve the social problems that had already started to affect earlier estates. These were believed to be the result of people being uprooted from close-knit working-class communities and sent to estates many miles away, where they knew nobody. The design of the estates meant that people would see their neighbours more rarely than they would have done in the terraced housing that had been typical in working-class areas.
Growing up, Marlene spent her first few years in a massive house in Scotland, but after she and her mother moved to her mother's native London, they took up residence in Stepney, a neighbourhood in Tower Hamlets. The first flat they lived in was in a block of council flats -- one bedroom in a high rise apartment building. They moved out shortly before Marlene started at Hogwarts, going to live with her grandparents in another part of Stepney. This flat was also a council-owned home: two bedrooms, two floors, with a mortgage of close to £300 monthly, plus a £60 council tax. The rooms were relatively spacious, but the age of the building was always apparent. The formal drawing room was originally used as Marlene's bedroom while she was home for holidays, until it was determined that this room allowed for Marlene and any guests to come in and out of the house unnoticed. It was formerly owned by Marlene's maternal grandparents, who lived in the flat with them before their passing in 1974 and 1975. Since 1971, they've slowly decreased the percentage of government contribution to the mortgage cost in an effort to attract wealthier buyers to the area. With only one person currently living in the flat, it also seems to the government an "excessive amount of space for one person", and their preference would be to move her into something significantly smaller to accommodate more needy families.
DEFINING GESTURES/MOVEMENTST?
SPEAKING STYLE/ACCENT?
Marlene has a generic working class Londoner accent, which she modifies a bit for work (re: classism-related insecurities), but sounds more Cockney when she's either angry or tired. An increase in double negatives is usually the first indication of her mood. Her Healer voice is warm and calm and peppered with a lot of terms of endearment -- primarily "darling" and "sweetheart". This is also the voice she uses when she's being emotionally manipulative. When angry, her speech is short and clipped. In person, she's more careful about her word choice, mood-related errors aside, because she can better read the emotions and body language of the person, but she struggles to interpret written tone.
PET PEEVES?
HOW DO THEY WANT TO BE SEEN BY OTHERS?: Capable
Above all, she wants to be seen as capable, which to Marlene is more important than being thought of as kind. She'd prefer being a person who stuck to their convictions over being kind, as well. Kindness is nice, but useless if you make no contribution, or abandon everything you believe in, simply to make people happy. Her personal convictions run contrary, however, to some of what the Order seems to support, so there is always an undercurrent of doubt for her. She worries that the people she works with aren't willing to go as far as they should to ensure that the rights of other people are protected.
DOES SHE MAKE SNAP JUDGEMENTS OR TAKE TIME TO CONSIDER?: She takes time to consider.
Her preference is overthinking, to the point where it occasionally leads to inaction, but
HOW DOES SHE REACT TO CRITICISM AND PRAISE:
WHAT'S HER VIEW ON RELATIONSHIPS AND LOVE: Do they believe in love at first sight? Are they in a relationship? How do they behave in a relationship? When did you character last have sex? What sort of sex do they have? Has your character ever been in love? Have they ever had their heart broken?
Marlene McKinnon met Graham Stewart in the winter of 1972, when she was fifteen, and he was twenty-two, though they had no romantic involvement. Their relationship was strictly professional: he was an acquaintance of her employer (Declan Russell, bookmaker and owner of The George Tavern), and Marlene occasionally assisted Graham with his work, upon request, serving as a combination of distraction and lookout. At the time, Marlene was in a relationship with Declan's seventeen year-old son David, her boyfriend of six months. Prior to that, she had been involved with Alan . Its noteworthy that whilst in school, Marlene never dated any of her Hogwarts peers. Marlene's relationship with Graham began in summer 1973 and exacerbated the already strained relationship between Graham and Declan, who had separate plans for the direction of their organisation. In February 1973, Ashwinder officially split from Declan's group, their goals more politically-motivated. The pair married 30 June 1974. Their divorce was final 13 December 1977.
Graham Alexander Stewart was born in Glasgow, Scotland on 15 April 1950. A Muggleborn, he was the first in his family to attend Hogwarts, and was sorted into Ravenclaw. He did not, however, complete a full seven years of school, leaving after his sixth year, in 1967. His biological parents (Susan Fraser and James Stewart) and are deceased, having died in 1955. He has one older brother, Arthur, with whom he moved to London in 1964.
